This Adorable Mini Ferrari F40 Is A Mazda Underneath

Last year, the Japanese tuner Liberty Walk showed off a widebody kit for the Ferrari F40 at the Tokyo Auto Salon. This year, the company introduced a pint-sized version of the iconic Italian supercar by applying the look to a Mazda Autozam AZ-1. The result is absolutely adorable.

The images below show Liberty Walk’s F40-inspired body kit and a stock AZ-1 side-by-side, so you can see how extensive the changes are.

The kit overhauls the AZ-1’s nose with a front fascia and hood that looks a lot like the F40. There are also canards on the corners and an extended splitter. Liberty Walk’s page for the upgrade notes that the dual round headlights are not part of the package.

Widened fenders at both ends broaden the AZ-1’s stance, and beefy side sills run between them. Liberty Walk also has new door panels with the embossed shape of a NACA duct to emulate the F40’s appearance.

The rear gets a tall, fixed wing with big endplates. According to the company, the revised bumper includes the reflectors but not the taillights. A diffuser with long strakes is also back there. Liberty Walk does not mention the exhaust, but the photos show a center-mounted three-pipe setup like on the F40.

There are no details about interior changes, but the sport seats visible in the photos are not stock. If you happen to own an AZ-1 and want to make it look like an iconic Ferrari, Liberty Walk charges $22,600 for the body kit. Plus, a customer needs to arrange the painting and installation of the pieces.

Liberty Walk also fits a set of six-spoke forged wheels with a black finish. They measure 16 inches in diameter at the front and 17 inches at the rear. The company charges $14,300 for them.

The AZ-1 was one of the most exciting cars in Japan’s kei class. Even in stock form, it looks like a mini supercar. The gullwing doors add to the sporty aesthetic. A mid-mounted turbocharged 657cc three-cylinder engine makes 63 horsepower, and a five-speed manual sends the power to the rear wheels.

Lexus Put The Toyota GR Corolla Engine In This Tiny Crossover

At long last, Lexus introduces a model equipped with the punchy three-cylinder engine found in the GR Yaris and GR Corolla. However, this isn’t another hot hatch; instead, it’s a sporty subcompact crossover. Launched last year, the LBX is a premium variant of the Yaris Cross. At the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon, Toyota’s luxury division showcased a concept powered by the G16E-GTS unit.

Smaller than the UX available in the United States, the LBX now packs a mighty 300-hp punch from its turbocharged 1.6-liter engine. The inline-three unit produces 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque, perfectly matching the GR Corolla Morizo Edition. Interestingly, the conceptual performance crossover also bears the Morizo moniker, the nickname of Toyota’s chairman, Akio Toyoda.

While the GR Corolla is exclusively available with a six-speed manual gearbox, the spicy LBX comes equipped with a newly developed eight-speed automatic transmission. This torque-converter ‘box made its debut in the 2024 GR Yaris at the same Tokyo Auto Salon in Japan this week. Similar to its application in the hot hatch, the transmission powers all four wheels in the small crossover, which, for now, remains at the concept stage.

Known by its full name as the Lexus LBX Morizo RR, the showcar from TAS sits slightly closer to the road thanks to a stiffer suspension setup. It also has a wider body and 19-inch wheels shod in 235/45 R19 tires. The engineers fitted a MacPherson strut front suspension and a double-wishbone rear, along with disc brakes at all corners. It also has a bunch of yellow accents as a nod to Akio Toyoda’s signature color.

A high-performance LBX would bring a colossal bump in output compared to the regular version, which features a puny hybrid powertrain making just 134 hp and 136 lb-ft (185 Nm). However, Lexus hasn’t said a word about potentially putting the LBX Morizo RR into production.

This Hyundai Ioniq 5 Will Literally Come At You Sideways

Not everything at CES this year is rooted in software. Behold the Mobion, a concept car from Hyundai parts group Mobis that is basically an Ioniq 5 with some neat-o moves. Remember MC Hammer doing the Typewriter dance way back in the 1990s? This car can do that. Sort of, anyway.

That’s because it incorporates a next-generation “e-Corner System,” which is a fancy way of saying all four of its wheels can turn independently. If that sounds like the GMC Hummer EV’s Crabwalk feature, you’re not wrong. However, in the Mobion, the wheels can rotate upwards of 90 degrees. That’s way more movement than you’ll get in the Hummer, allowing the Mobion to move laterally.

Many cars offer some measure of four-wheel steering these days, but this kind of articulation isn’t accomplished without considerable thought and engineering. Among other things, each wheel is basically its own self-enclosed powertrain. Hyundai Mobis calls this “In-Wheel” technology, incorporating an electric motor, braking, steering, and suspension functions at every wheel.

Without any axle shafts or extra brake components threading into the underbody, the Mobion can literally drive sideways for the easiest parallel-parking job of your motoring career. Or for those seeking a bit of fun, it can also perform pivot turns to pull off the best donuts ever. Of course, for demonstration purposes, this is performed at slow speeds, but you get the idea.

You’ll note we mentioned earlier that this is a next-generation system. Hyundai Mobis has been working on this for a while now, showcasing a version on an Ioniq 5 earlier in 2023. In addition to wielding this next-gen maneuvering tech, the Mobion stands apart from a normal Ioniq 5 with new exterior lighting that can alert other drivers to a bevy of situations such as pedestrians crossing. It can also project images onto the ground to through a 360-degree spectrum, alerting others of the car’s intended direction, among other things.

Will it come to production? Hyundai has nothing to say about future applications of the e-Corner System at this time. But considering the practical benefits of a car that can move sideways or spin in place (without egregious tire smoke, anyway), it’s virtually guaranteed that we’ll see more of this in the months and years to come.

NASCAR Is Getting Its Own ‘Drive to Survive’ Style Netflix Show

Netflix’s Drive to Survive put Formula 1 on the map for millions of Americans, and now a very similar series about NASCAR will be released on the popular streaming platform. Called NASCAR: Full Speed, A Netflix Sports Series, the new show follows 16 drivers as they fight for the Cup Series championship. Like its F1 counterpart, the camera crews had “exclusive access” to drivers both on and off the track. The five episodes will be 45 minutes each.

The trailer is more of a teaser and doesn’t say a ton about the structure of the show, however the release date is coming up fast. The series is set to drop on January 30th, a little less than three weeks from now.

The program appears to have been filmed during the 2023 season, which featured many big crashes including Ryan Preece’s wild airborne wreck which he thankfully escaped with only minor injuries. It’s featured prominently in the trailer.

Another similar series covering IndyCar was announced in late 2022, but there has been little news about it since. That series was also not going to be hosted by any popular streaming platform. This NASCAR show is obviously different.

The short run of only five episodes makes the series dissimilar to Drive to Survive, which is typically closer to 10. Whether or not the NASCAR action will be as heavily dramatized as what goes on in F1 is yet to be seen. It can only be a good thing to grow NASCAR’s audience, though, which has fluctuated heavily since the mid-aughts.

VinFast Previews Production EV Pickup With A Ranger-Sized Concept

The electric pickup segment is one of the hottest sectors in the auto market right now, with compelling vehicles like the Ford F-150 Lightning, Tesla Cybertruck, and Rivian R1T making headlines daily. VinFast is preparing its own entry, showing off its VF Wild EV truck concept at CES 2024 as a preview of a future production model.

The VF Wild’s shape takes inspiration from “the flowing motion of a superhero’s cape in the wind,” according to VinFast. However, the silhouette doesn’t remind us of Batman perched on top of a building watching Gotham City. The body has side-mounted cameras for improving the exterior’s aerodynamics.

The truck features a five-foot-long cargo bed with a power-folding mid-gate that extends the carrgo space into the cabin, much like the Silverado EV. With the rear seats down the VF Wild can carry loads up to eight feet long. The interior also has a panoramic glass roof.

Vinfast isn’t offering any details about the payload or max towing capacity. There’s also no info about the electric powertrain or the battery pack. But we do know the VF Wild concept is 209 inches long and 79 inches wide, putting it in the midsize truck category. For comparison, a Ford Ranger is 210.6 inches long and 75.5 inches wide, and a Toyota Tacoma is 213 inches by 76.9 inches.

“This is not just a new product in our offering – it showcases our aspiration to venture into the fast-paced and thriving electric pickup truck market,” said Tran Mai Hoa, Deputy CEO of Sales and Marketing at VinFast. The company didn’t offer any details about when a production version of the VF Wild would be on the market.

It’s not clear whether VinFast actually plans to sell the production VF Wild in America right now. If the truck were greenlit for the US, it would presumably be built at the company’s $4 billion factory that is currently under construction in Chatham County, North Carolina. This would allow the Vietnamese automaker to get around the “chicken tax” that places a 25 percent tariff on imported light trucks, allowing the production-spec VF Wild to be priced competitively against other midsize trucks.

Honda Will Build An Edgy EV Based On This Concept

Honda is “starting from the beginning” with its next generation of EVs. As the automaker readies for a battery-powered future, two new electric concepts make their debut at CES 2024 in Las Vegas offering a preview of Honda’s new design language and engineering philosophy.

The first of the two concepts is the unimaginatively named Saloon. This is the concept from the teaser we saw back in December, and the final product looks just as edgy as we expected. A wedge-shaped front gives way to a fastback-styled rear with two rectangular lighting elements at each end. The LED signatures up front surround a new/retro “H” logo (which will be used exclusively for EVs), while rectangular taillights wrap around an updated Honda wordmark in the rear.

2024 Honda Saloon EV Concept
2024 Honda Saloon EV Concept

The cabin opts for a minimalist aesthetic with a single screen spanning the width of the dash a la Mercedes-Benz Hyperscreen and a yoke-style wheel controlling a steer-by-wire system. The sport bucket seats are form-fitting for sporty driving and have two curved screens on the seatbacks, while all of the materials – inside and out – are sustainably sourced. Honda says that a production car based on the Saloon concept will be available in North America in 2026.

The Space-Hub minivan concept looks neat, but Honda doesn’t say anything about it going into production (as far as we know). It was developed as a way to “augment people’s daily lives,” says Honda, with a hugely spacious cabin and tons of visibility. If we’re optimistic, it could spawn a new design language for the next Odyssey minivan. But that’s just speculation.

2024 Honda Space-Hub EV Concept

These two concepts mark the first vehicles in the new Honda “0 Series” philosophy, which will consist of the angular design language you see here and new engineering practices for electric vehicles. It will also include new in-car technologies like artificial intelligence and more advanced safety equipment.

Watch This Rally Car Miss An Icy Corner, Slide Directly Into A Swimming Pool

Unlike other forms of motorsport, rallies often have routes that include public roads. That often means there’s little to no runoff on the side of the road, so a driver and co-driver need to trust that the pace notes are precise and the driver won’t exceed the limit. Still, things will go wrong. And when they do, they can go very wrong. For example, this Skoda Fabia RS slid into an Austrian swimming pool.

Driver Johannes Keferböck and co-driver Ilka Minor were competing in the 2024 Jännerrallye in northern Austria. Keferböck was on a snowy downhill run into a lefthander when things went awry. The sub-optimal conditions combined with speed and perhaps a bit of late braking and maybe some ice saw the Skoda go straight instead of making the corner, and with some very watery consequences.

From a brief glance at the Jännerrallye’s stages, which had a mix of dirt and asphalt, it’s not all that shocking that a car ended up in this pool. A wood fence is the only barrier between the road and the water, it’s a few feet off the course, and it’s at the bottom of a fast hill and heavy braking zone. When you add the slick conditions, well, if it wasn’t this Skoda, it probably would’ve been a different rally car.

The car was fully submerged, but Keferböck and Minor were able to exit safely. There are no reports of them suffering any injuries.

The car’s fate is less clear. Since it only hit a wood fence, the body shouldn’t have taken much damage. That said, no matter how tough a rally car is, it’s not meant to be fully submerged. The wiring is surely damaged, if not destroyed. Mechanical damage is also likely, too, since the car was running when it hit the water. And even if it wasn’t, none of those parts are meant to be in a pool at any time. So, if you see a cut price Fabia RS in the future, make sure to check that it has no history of water damage before pulling the trigger.

This Rear-Drive Honda Civic Is Basically A Turbo S2000 Hatchback

The world of car creativity knows no bounds, and crazy builds are a way of life for a select few enthusiasts. While most of us chinwag about what we would do given the time, budget, and skill, very few go out and get it done. One of those few was tuner parts website Throtl, who went out and built a rear-wheel drive EK Honda Civic hatchback with a 500-horsepower turbo K20 engine.

Featured on Larry Chen’s YouTube channel, the car mostly looks like a highly modified widebody Civic, and doesn’t hint at its rear-drive conversion from the outside. Only the most keen Honda fans will notice the raised transmission tunnel to accommodate the S2000 drivetrain used for the conversion.

Although the car is running a totally different drivetrain configuration, the amount of change is shockingly minimal. Most of the stock metal is retained, with stealthy modifications made to accommodate the longitudinal engine. The stock dash is still in place, and the engine bay is largely unmodified. The magic of the conversion is in the hidden sheet metal; the transmission tunnel took a lot of massaging to fit the S2000 gearbox, and more space was carved out for the custom driveshaft. Oh, and it uses a modified rear subframe with modified rear hubs to accommodate the S2000 rear differential.

Rest assured, this Honda is no mere show car. Mickey Andrade, lead content creator for Throtl, has driven the car in Gridlife time attack, and at track days for fun. It’s seen real use, and is apparently difficult to drive thanks to its short wheelbase and high horsepower. It’s also severely under-tired at just a 245mm wide tire, which Andrade says will be upgraded in the future. Also, the car does sick burnouts.

There’s nothing better than a ridiculous car hidden underneath a relatively pedestrian body. This Civic ticks all of those boxes.

Instead, it varies the lift of the intake valves to control the air entering the engine, thus controlling engine power and speed.

Here’s how the eccentric shaft actuator impacts engine performance:

  1. Precision Control of Valve Lift: This actuator is responsible for adjusting the position of the eccentric shaft, which in turn varies the opening lift of the intake valves. By precisely controlling the lift, it ensures optimal air-fuel mixture for different driving conditions.
  2. Improved Fuel Efficiency: The engine can operate more efficiently by eliminating the need for a throttle valve and allowing for more precise control of the intake valves. This results in better fuel economy as the engine is not drawing in more air than necessary.
  3. Enhanced Engine Responsiveness: The actuator allows quick valve lift adjustments, leading to improved throttle response. This is particularly noticeable in situations requiring quick acceleration or power changes.
  4. Reduced Emissions: More precise control over the air-fuel mixture means more complete combustion. This leads to lower emissions, as the engine can run cleaner with fewer unburnt fuel particles.
  5. Potential Maintenance Issues: While offering many benefits, this system can be complex and require specialized maintenance. Issues with the eccentric shaft actuator can lead to engine performance problems, including rough idling, power loss, and increased emissions.
  6. Compatibility and Integration: This component is specifically engineered for engines designed with the Valvetronic system. Its integration with other engine control systems, like the Engine Control Unit (ECU), is crucial for overall performance.
